In public education, kids don’t get the chance to learn how to care for their environment. Planet Protectors Academy looks to change that. With the help of Douglas College marketing students, the Academy hopes to gain awareness to get more teachers on board.

At this point the Planet Protector Academy has 3 programs with a 4th coming in early 2018. They are Keep Cool, Zero Heroes, Emergency Prep Squad, and H2WHOA! These programs focus on different aspects of the environment; like climate, transportation, energy conservation, zero waste, emergency preparedness, and water saving.

The program works through six 1 hour modules that happen once a week. Students form teams in order to earn points through videos, games, music, and missions. It is all available on a website that the teacher projects onto a screen for the class. This program has many positives besides saving the environment, including: being flexible & adaptable, bringing technology into the classroom, engages with different types of learners, and inspires real change outside the classroom.

Through Douglas College, the marketing students have done research in order to determine how to make Planet Protector Academy have a better presence in the market. The students believe through more interaction on social media specifically targeting the teachers, PPA can move up the chain to get implemented into schools over time.

Planet Protector Academy has had a great community impact thus far. In the schools they have been implemented to so far, the communities have seen 50% less families driving and idling, 70% of families saving energy at home, and 60% of families making less garbage. Through the program there also are the impacts of letting kids cause change in families, as well as tracking the behavior changes of the students.
